House-studio of the architect Melnikov, a world-famous masterpiece of the Soviet avant-garde

Konstantin Melnikov studied 12 years in the School of Painting — first at the general education and then on the pictorial and architectural offices.

In 1924 Melnikov won a contest to design the Lenin Mausoleum sarcofagus.

In 1925, at Paris International Exhibition a Soviet pavilion designed by Melnikov made a sensation.

Place reviews

  • The House-Studio was constructed in 1927–1929 by architect Konstantin Melnikov for himself and his family and it is an international icon of the Modern movement.

At the time Melnikov was the star architect of the Soviet Union, having won the Grand Prix for his Soviet pavilion at the Paris Exposition in 1925. His was one of the few private houses to be built during the Soviet period. Although radical in appearance and reminiscent of American grain silos, peasant building techniques were employed in the construction of the house, making it extremely efficient economically.
