In 1934 Dr.Zorin, who worked on new frost-hardy citrus cultivars, planted a little green lemon tree in the garden.
Then, he methodically ingrafted in its head: Japanese satsuma orange, Spanish orange, Chinese kumquat, Italian lemon, etc. — overall 45 kinds of citruses.
In 1957 three Vietnamese doctors suggested to call this garden-tree 'The Friendship Tree'.
At this moment the Friendship Tree holds in its head numerous branches which were brought by famous representatives of 170 countries, including presidents, scientists, cosmonauts and so on (about 700 ingraftings made).
There are other 60 young friendship trees surrounding the first one. These were planted by visitors from foreign countries (USA, Poland, Canada, Japan, etc.).
In 1981 the Friendship Tree Museum was founded (architects: Borkalov E.I., Saveliev A.I.). There visitors can look at extensive collection of presents which were given to the Friendship Tree by people from all over the world: national souvenirs, letters, photographs, relics, different musical instruments, coins, lapel pins, caskets with soil from memorable and historical sites. The Friendship Tree Museum has in its keeping more than 20,000 presents from all continents.
Letters come from all parts of our country and from abroad.
